In this exclusive interview, our Lead Developer, Dylan Brain, shares his insights into why we combine Shopify and Sanity to build modern ecommerce experiences.

With years of experience designing scalable, high-performance online stores, Dylan explains how separating commerce infrastructure from content management allows brands to move faster, reduce friction between teams, and create more flexible, secure digital experiences.

Why did you choose to use Shopify and Sanity together?

We wanted to clearly separate business and marketing logic from product management.

By using Shopify for anything product-related and Sanity for content updates, each platform can focus on what it does best. Shopify is best-in-class for product management, tax and compliance, and order processing. It also has a clean, easy-to-use interface that prevents teams from feeling overwhelmed by unnecessary information.

Sanity, on the other hand, is purpose-built for structured content, flexible page building, and integrating bespoke functionality. From a security perspective, moving products to Shopify and content to Sanity also strengthens the overall setup. Both platforms offer a more robust security infrastructure than most agencies would realistically build from scratch.

How do Shopify and Sanity complement each other when building and managing an online store?

They complement each other through a clear separation of responsibilities. Marketing executives can focus entirely on content within Sanity, while other team members manage products and inventory in Shopify.

Put simply, Shopify defines what the product is, while Sanity defines how the product is positioned and experienced. That distinction makes collaboration far more efficient.

What advantages does this setup provide when designing ecommerce experiences such as product pages, collections, and campaigns?

Product pages and collections are straightforward to set up and manage, particularly with smart collections, which allow you to dynamically generate collections based on the fields you choose to track.

Where Shopify really shines is in its marketing integrations. You can easily set up and manage campaigns without relying heavily on a developer, which speeds up execution and gives marketing teams greater independence.

How does using Sanity alongside Shopify improve how ecommerce teams manage content, products, and promotions day to day?

It significantly reduces friction between teams. Marketing can concentrate fully on content within Sanity, while products and inventory are managed separately in Shopify. Because each team works within its own clearly defined space, there is less overlap, fewer bottlenecks, and a much smoother day-to-day workflow.

What types of ecommerce brands or store setups benefit most from using Shopify with Sanity?

This setup is particularly beneficial for brands looking to move away from WooCommerce or other systems such as Magento or Wordpress. It works well for organisations with dedicated marketing teams that need greater control over content.

It is also ideal for stores that want to integrate custom functionality within Sanity, such as marketing tools or AI-driven workflows. Lastly, brands that feel their current product system has become overly complex can benefit from simplifying their product management through Shopify.

At a high level, how do Shopify and Sanity technically integrate to power an ecommerce site?

At a high level, Shopify and Sanity integrate by separating the commerce infrastructure from the content management system and connecting them through APIs within a frontend application.

Shopify powers all core ecommerce functionality, including products, pricing, inventory, payments, and checkout, ensuring everything is secure, reliable, and scalable. Sanity manages all on-site content, such as homepage sections, campaigns, storytelling modules, and SEO, giving teams full flexibility to update and evolve the experience.

The website connects to both systems behind the scenes, pulling live product data from Shopify and structured content from Sanity. This approach allows us to design completely custom, high-performance pages without being restricted by traditional Shopify themes.
